At the same time, Santa Fe needed nearly 200-plus locomotives for secondary and branch line service.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSanta Fe got creative: strip the truss car body down to the engine deck, replace the truss members with large, deep side sills, and fabricate stairs and GP7-like hoods suitable for switching, similar to other GP7-style locomotives in use at the time. In late 1969, the first CF7 was rebuilt at Santa Fe's Cleburne Shops, with 232 more following through 1978 - one of the most successful locomotive rebuild programs of all time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThroughout the CF7 rebuild program, several variations emerged. Most notable were the cab profiles and side sills. The CF7 had two distinct cab profiles: round and angled. The large side sills came in two variations as well: open and closed slots.
